The Hohe Salve
Tyrol's No. 1 panoramic mountain
A well-developed sports and activity mountain; with a 1,829 meter high summit. The free-standing location of the Hohe Salve allows me to enjoy magnificent views of the Kitzbühel Alps and the Zillertal Alps, the Wilder Kaiser massif and the Hohe Tauern in good weather.
The 360° view of over 70 three-thousand-metre peaks from the revolving panorama platform at the Hohe Salve summit restaurant is also possible without much effort, as the Hopfgarten and Söll cable cars make it easy and comfortable for me to reach the summit with two 8-seater gondola lifts ! Once at the top, I recommend a visit to the highest church in Austria, the pilgrimage church of St. John the Baptist. The Salvenkirchlein is the ideal starting point for many beautiful hikes.
A hike suitable for everyone leads around the summit of the Hohe Salve: an easy panoramic trail with no significant inclines offers wonderful views of all the surrounding mountains. Another highlight is the sundial trail, where 12 sundial stations reveal the secrets of the sun, wind and weather and vividly explain the history of timekeeping. A wind harp transforms the wind into music, encouraging visitors to pause and listen to the sounds.
Highlights
- Sundial & wind harp: On the summit of the Hohe Salve, an ancient place of worship and sky observation, the concept of "time" can be experienced through the senses. I can trace the secrets of the sun, wind and weather in many small experiments. It is made clear how time flows and the wind sings.
- Visit to the Salvenkirche: The summit innkeeper has a wealth of stories to tell about the legendary Salvenkirchlein and has exciting tales to tell about the magical "Wetterstein", giants, witches and saints.
- Kirchtags-Kiachl live: The landlady likes to let me experience how to make Tyrolean Kirchtags-Kiachl "ziacht und aussabacht". (Every Wednesday at lunchtime!)
- Salvenkirche devotion: Every first Wednesday of the month at 11.00 a.m. (July to October)
Mountain railroads to the Hohe Salve
- Hopfgarten: Salvista run I + II
- Söll: Hexenwasser gondola lift + Hohe Salve cable car
- Itter: Salvistabahn (only up to the Kleine Salve - hike up to the Hohe Salve possible - 380 m difference in altitude)
Rain on the Hohe Salve
Even in bad weather, I can experience a lot on Tyrol's most beautiful panoramic mountain, the Hohe Salve: The Salvenkirchlein is Austria's highest church and has a few legends and stories to offer. The innkeeper at the summit tells me exciting stories about the magical "Wetterstein" and the landlady lets me experience how real Tyrolean "Kirchtags-Kiachl" are made and baked (every Wednesday at lunchtime). I can play hide and seek around the Salvenriesen.
